Alco's in the US tended to smoke like a steam engine like this locomotive. It was from turbo lag and unburned fuel pooling in places it should not have. When they up the RPM's the fuel burns off but with not enough oxygen.

ALCO (American Locomotive Company) locomotives were known for making thick black smoke.

Szymon, Alcohol was a US company that built diesel locomotives, that has since ceased operations. Their engines were known for exhausting out black smoke. My comment on " tier 4" is in reference to laws in the US governing exhaust emissions. Tier 4 is the latest level, which basically is to prevent any visible exhaust (soot)
