I thought they all just reverse direction in Penn Station? Why is it going through Sunnyside?

We usually took the train around the loop in sunnyside. Most of the time, we go through the wash around the loop and are either yarded for an extended stay till the evening rush or until a station track has cleared. With so many trains from three transit company's using Penn Station trains can't just sit in the station waiting to turn back.
