I believe it is supposed to represent "The Creation of Adam" a fresco painting by Michelangelo, which forms part of the Sistine Chapel's ceiling in Vatican City. That would be God's arm/hand... in the painting he's touching Adam's hand. This guy is very talented!

This is God's hand from the famous Michelangelo painting "The Creation of Adam".
Posted by Ed Eaglehouse on April 29, 2016
My guess to the intention of the arm is in honor of a panel of Michelangelo's painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel representing the hand of God. Talented indeed.

The hand is reaching another hand. Google for EEC 5344, you will see. Great picture!

It appears to be a recreation of God's hand from the painting "The Creation of Adam" by Michelangelo. Never thought I'd see that on a railcar...

The arm stretched out is taken from Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel fresco titled "The Creation of Adam".

The ID numbers were not painted over. That's interesting. Also it looks like something one might see on the Sistine Chapel Ceiling. Is this painting consistent with the direction of travel?

There's something oddly beautiful about that. Were I the company, I'd clear coat that so it stays. Also, it's "God's Finger" from this image: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/64/Creaci%C3%B3n_de_Ad%C3%A1n_(Miguel_%C3%81ngel).jpg The "creation of Adam" by Michelangelo.

This is one of two cars the tagger did. The other has another hand reaching back up. It is fashioned after the Sistine Chapel.

I think it's absolutely stunning artwork. I'm tired of the railfans who criticize this art form and immediately dismiss it simply because they consider it vandalism. The way I see it is that most of these freight cars out there on the System offer very little individuality aesthetically, so these artists of the world are decorating them in truly impressive liveries, making our hobby that much more fascinating! Kudos on the post and keep up the good shooting!

Looks like the hand of God as painted in Michelangelo's "The Creation of Adam".

That's from the Sistine Chapel, Micheal Angelo's the creation, it's God's hand touching Adam.

I think it's one of a pair of boxcars the artist used to recreate a portion of the Sistine Chapel ceiling (the section where god's hand touches man's. Micro Trains made a model of the pair in N scale. Quite the artist, whoever did this

Perhaps inspired by the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel...

Brandon, there is an artist's rendering of God's hand reaching down to man's hand. See www.bowlofoates.com for samples. As much as I detest vandalism, this did give me pause.

What the artist's meaning is, indeed is a guess; but what the image is is not a guess, it is the creation of Adam in the Sistine Chapel painting by Michelangelo.

I think it's supposed to remind us of Michelangelo's "The Creation of Adam" But you're right, that's my guess. Nice photo either way.

I have seen a photo of the matching boxcar adjacent to this one which has the extended arm from the other direction. It is a reference to Michaelangelo's, "The Creation of Adam" which is depicted in the Sistine Chapel. With both box cars coupled it made a complete view. Possibly was on Tumblr or Pinterest that I saw it posted.

Do not know if I can link this from another site, but the meaning of the painting is a take of Michelangelo's the "Hand of God and Man". Here is the link to the shot of both cars together. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3729417

Looks like God's hand in Michelangelo's "The Creation of Adam" to me. What do you bet there's a matching car with Adam's hand?

It's a detail of God's hand from The Creation of Adam from the Sistine Chapel: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1f/Creation_of_Adam_Sistine_Chapel.jpg

Playing in Google found a picture of the cars together posted in Photobucket by a person using name johnnyroadglide. The white on black reporting marks have been added over the art. From what was found other places online it seems the work is from 2013, I think.

I did some research, and it seems you all are correct. I felt like it might be God's hand that was depicted but I wasn't sure. Thank you all for the information on the painting and for your kind words! I greatly appreciate it. Thanks again!

In an era where society thinks it's bad to mention the Christian religion in public, I'm OK with the hand of God being seen by thousands of people every day!

Kudos to First Coast Railroad for not painting over this work other than adding reporting marks. It is a shame that commerce requires the two cars be separated.

I suppose next we'll be seeing the Monty Python foot!
Posted by Kibu on May 2, 2016
Looking at the paint on the car, I suspect part of the reason why the railroad didn't just paint over it other than the reporting marks, has to do with the fact that the artist painted the entire car. It didn't start out that tan color. (If you look closely, you can see where the guy painted over other graffiti. Meaning that the company essentially got a free paint job, and a pair of VERY iconic cars. In all honesty, were I on the board of the company, I'd consider donating the two to a museum, just to preserve the beautiful work. Yes, Graffiti is bad...but sometimes work like this stands out and makes people stop and think. (As a side note, I'm using photos of the two cars together to paint for my model railroad, and may have a few extras for anyone that wants them (HO scale). If you do, shoot me a private message and when they're done I'll see what I can do.)

I have to question if this is "graffiti" or did the RR have anything to do with it. Great advertising, this has made the national papers.

Two thoughts. 1- Was there a second car painted with Adam's hand? That would be AWESOME. 2- Microtrains.... lets see this in N scale format :)
Posted by Marc Weeks on May 5, 2016
You don't have to guess what painting it's derived from, because the artist painted the title near the right end of the car: "The Creation of Adam" and a date, I think.
Posted by Kibu on May 5, 2016
There was a second boxcar painted with Adam's hand also.
