Interesting story Bill.

The best paint scheme the BNSF ever had. It is a shame they went away from it.

Ah, so it's YOUR fault ! I wish you had sent them a drawing of a Cascade Green warbonnet, orange trim & lettering on a silver hood. Maybe you could still do that?

So the orange and green is all your fault j/k :) Seriously though, a very interesting story. Perhaps you can send another note to Mr. Ice and inspire him to bring back the warbonnet. I'd even be happy with a heritage unit or three.

Those of us around Kalmbach at the time sort of figured it best not to design something that was tilted too much to one of the partners. The Grinstein (sp?) scheme on the SD70MACs was pretty nice, but for visibility orange seemed a good choice. This was in part because UP had yellow and Canadians had red. The drawing set to Mr. Krebs was of basically an SD75M in the MAC scheme with tan changed to orange. I kept the red stripes to avoid showing a preference for Great Northern. They painted an SD60M with red striping in two varieties (one on each side), then chose yellow. I was happy they went with yellow, being a closet GN fan. I would have preferred NP/ATSF style silver trucks with a black or green tank. Also a thinner stripe. Of course by 1998 the stripes got thicker ala ATSF warbonnet, thus the Heritage II scheme. The best looking variant of HI was on the road switchers with no silver on the trucks or tank. The current wedge scheme looks best on the EMD hoods as well in my opinion.

Regarding heritage unit, Tom Danneman who also shot these units that night has done some very nice renditions of heritage applications. It would be great if his work could be applied to some units.
