Such an interesting location for a station! Nice catch - thanks for sharing!

Another great look back. I visited this station a couple times in late 1976, and remember a shorter shed. Do you know if it was partially removed in early Amtrak years? Of course, my memory could be faulty...

The shed is long gone but the depot which is out of sight on the right is still there as of 2013. The procedure was, the passenger train would back up onto the pier, the passengers would step of the train and onto a ferry which would take them across the bay to Norfolk. Today this service is provided by bus from the Amtrak station across the street from Huntington Park which is also the home of K-4 2-8-4 2756.

Maybe that should be the George Washington, instead of the Georgia Washington.

One day, a few weeks after this was taken, a 20ยข local bus ride got me here from historic Ft. Monroe, my Army duty station at the end of the peninsula. Gave the 3-car train a good going-over; the "Chessie Sleeper" (then C&O/B&O's service brand) was spotlessly clean and ready to join the rest of the GW at Charlottesville.

Thanks for the informative response "cavranger", suddenly the location for this station makes MUCH more sense.
