Thanks for sharing. The SD9 was a fine looking machine with its high hood and rounded cab roof. I have a question, what were the louvers for along the edges beneath the hand rails?

I can't tell you exactly why the louvers are on the sill doors, but would expect it might have something to do with permitting better airflow in that area. There is a lot of wiring under there and it was standard to have the engineer side louvered, while they fireman side was not (see 4416). I have a photo of a unit with the doors dropped open and will try and post it one of these days.

They're just vents. The traction motor cables run through there. If you look at the 4416 you can see there are no vents on that side.

Thank you for the replies. I had never noticed that the vents were on one side only.
