Judging by the vertical streaks on the tunnel's walls, it looks like the grade inside the tunnel is very steep. The arches give a very unique effect.

Did they ever get the other tunnel filled in and check for those lost locomotives in the process ?

It appears concrete ties were installed at some point before being shut down.

pjflstc: The ties inside the tunnel are still wooden—the discoloration is perhaps from seeping minerals, etc.

Tunnel grade is about 1.43% ascending; 1% through tunnel; then increases to 3%; according to an accident report on page 58 of Accident Bulletin, Volumes 55-62 By United States. Federal Railroad Administration. Office of Safety. And, yes, that is a Google Books find, I don't have the book in my possession.
