Faded Warbonnet is better than no warbonnet. Going, going... Please BNSF bring back the Warbonnet!

I recall several manufacturers having paint problems back in the early 1990's during the transition to the new VOC compliant water base paints. Some of the early water based paints faded or peeled, or both. We manufactured truck bodies & trailers and our cost quadrupled switching to the VOC compliant water based urethane paint. I have no knowledge when this loco was built, but it appears to be experiencing the same result I've seen hundreds of times in the early to mid 90's.

Wouldn't be the first time Santa Fe had trouble with paint. Back in the days before they started converting F units into CF7's, I remember reading somewhere that they had trouble with the red warbonnet paint actually sticking to the nose of some of the units. For reasons that escape me now, ATSF would first paint an undercoat of yellow (that would become the stripe and part of the cigar band), and then over coat that with red. Whatever the case, the red wouldn't stick for a time, causing it to peel away, leaving a "yellow bonnet" of sorts. They eventually fixed the problem, but for a period their Passenger F units carried the odd yellow nose scheme.
