Why was it preferable to have a minority builder up front? Smoother ride?

The comment is from a railfan perspective, not from an operational perspective. During that era, it was sometimes tough to find a train that didn't have an SD or a GP leading, so a train with a GE or an Alco on the point was a bonus.
