Chris - this is a very interesting photo in your collection. I always have been a fan of "Uncle Pete" Union Pacific, and I have always been surprised by them yet I've had admiration for this railroad as being the "test railroad" to try and experiment with new ideas and equipment. The UP had some strange experiments - like this "oddity" - and some "ugly ducklings" (the U50C's come to mind) as well as the biggest of every type of locomotive too. World's biggest steam, biggest diesel, biggest single unit locomotive (the Gas-Turbines) and the biggest single frame steam locomotive (the 4-12-2 No. 9000). This is a rarity, and a very nice photo - too bad this unit wasn't saved from the scrapper's torch.

A great view of one of the most exotic and (in my opinion) most fascinating locomotives ever; and a fine addition to your amazing RailPictures library of classic-era photos.

This is pretty darn cool. I've never seen a photo of this thing in operation. Well done!
