Thanks for posting this great image and providing info on how this operation worked. I really like the use of gravity and a spring switch to get the job done.

This is actually the old B&O coal loader to load coal into ships, not a Hulett for iron ore unloading. The Hulett unloaders were a bit farther upriver.

Nice shot and boy does everything look clean and neat there! We are not looking at a Hulett here but a car dumper that unloaded, usually coal, into the boats. The Hulett was a giant machine which traveled on its own tracks to allow the whole length of the boat to be unloaded. See here for more about the Hulett's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hulett

From the orientation of having two barneys, it seems likely that operation used both at the same time. While one was pushing a car up, the other would be coming down to grab a car. When the first one's car had been unloaded and pushed out of the kickback area, the second one would be starting up the slope, with the process simply repeated.
