You are correct - it is not the same. Even after 30 years, I still miss seeing the caboose and maybe getting a wave from the employee.

What does P stand for, and what's the blue/green car in the background?

YL; The “P” is a marking on a caboose that is used in pool service. The green car in the background is a former passenger car painted in UP’s Maintenance-of-way green colors.

The Large P was used to identify these as Pool Caboose. Not sure what that particular car is in the background but that color green for UP meant MOW equipment.
