Nice to still see a High Hood of any model on any railroad. Won't be long before NS orders this and the others that remain to be sent to Juniata to get chopped and outfitted with new "Admiral Cabs" and other upgrades like short hood forward only operation controls like they are doing with their Geep High Hoods right now. Good catch and photo Charles - get the photos of these "old girls" while you still can.

This group of 10 has another oddity, they have dual control stands. A N&W standard until 1974. NW 1635 was born with stand turned straight on the wrong side copying a SOUthern practice that started in 1967 ((the bi-directional cab)engineer was on right for signal viewing long hood forward and could see well short hood out being on wrong side...a Union breaker to get rid of hostlers and having to turn power)) . NW 1625 to NW 1634 marked the end of ordering High short hoods a practice SOUthern kept until 1981. NW 1635 also was the first Low short hood order by N&W.

Knowing it'd be tough to see one again, I knew I had to make the drive for this one. I'm realizing that nothing, even that which you think you're prioritizing, can be taken for granted these days.

Thanks for that bit of history, Allan! I was able to see the dual controls this one has, and it sure is an interesting setup.
