This is the first photo that I have seen of these units in a train. Either as delivered, or, later as a "camera car", I have only seen static shots of the locomotives. Weird and ugly.....

At least the paint matches between the loco's and the test car. Looks like a set. Wonder if these had a much different sound then typical END or GE loco's?

Nice shot. I am also checking out that iced reefer there, wondering when the last of those ran.

I've heard the single-stripe paint scheme first appeared on the hyrdaulics, then on other units, which would explain its presence on the dyno car. As for that reefer, Sid, I wondered about that when I converted the slide. Of course at the time, 1963, i only had eyes for the KMs.

Never heard one, but they had pairs of medium-speed turbocharged four-stroke V16's, turning about 1500 RPM, so I doubt they sounded much like typically low-speed (max 900 RPM) two-stroke EMD diesels. Probably a very smooth sound. The in-restoration SP roadswitcher version will have one operating prime mover of identical description, I believe, so that should provide some indication.

I liked this carbody far better than the hood units. I wonder what they were like to run. Probably the best looking diesel locomotive ever produced in Europe. IHMO that ain't saying much.
