Needless to say in the ROCK's last years the physical plant was in dire shape.

Yep, the Rock Island power that showed up at North Yard was generally in pretty sorry shape. I remember a Rio Grande machinist once commented "We patch them up well enough to get the train rolling. Once they leave here, it's all downhill!"
