Sometimes it's hard to look at a photo like this and realize the Twin Cities 400 could make nearly 100 mph on this track. My best childhood friends had an aunt that owned a 57 Chevy Bel Aire and they tried to pace the 400 east out of Altoona, giving up at around 100 mph circa 1959 or 1960. At least that's the story they told me. My dad returned from the marines after WWII in the lounge car where he recalled the speedometer topped 100 with regularity back in 1945 or so. The railroad later discontinued displaying the speed of the train.
