Why do I suddenly hear the Empire Theme Music from "Star Wars" while looking at this photo? "Star Wars" signals salute the Dark Side of the "Horse" (NS) - Incredible photo F. J. - Cool capture..no pun intended!

This image shows just how signal lens work. One beam to be guided out to be seen at far distances, and when the crew is closer, the beams that fired off in 45 degree angles are meant to be seen closer. Of course this doesn't mean that's all they see. Anyone can tell you that you can see it's red from almost any angle... but this was originally the concept behind 'Searchlights'.

I'm guessing that the "halo" beams are caused by the outer rim of the lenses (bezels?) and tend to make the viewing a little more well-defined.
