Nicely done, in my mind if the person doing the work had permission it is art if not it is vandalism, even if it is well done.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!" is a quote often bantered about in situations regarding graffiti - some see it as "Freedom of speech!" - an "Artful expression" - and a "chance for street artists to show their amazing work!" I don't know about where those people stand on Law and Order - but Vandalism is a crime no matter how pretty you make it look. It's like an old farmer's saying: "You can put a dress on a pig, and no matter how cute or pretty you make it look - it's still a pig!" Same thing with graffiti - no matter how "Artistic" or "Beautifully" or "Creatively done - it's still a crime that needs to be punished. This very beautiful work of art was done while the artist was committing a crime - no matter how much you enjoy the work and admire the quality of the piece. Why didn't the person who created this go to a public recreation center and do this on a canvass? There are plenty of free programs that would allow for this person to express themselves creatively - and even encourage them by creating a showing of their work in a public forum even with professional promotional methods as well. As much as I do admire this piece of creative work - the artist still committed a crime making it - if they did not have permission from the railroad or the car owner to create this on this equipment. If this was done with permission - I have no problem with it. I still like it either way but if it was done illegally - it's a crime and the person needs to face the results of committing that crime.

But this "artist" knew how not to arouse RRs against him by leaving all pertinent date (initials, car number, weight limit stenciling, et. al.) exposed and not covered by graffiti. He knew what he was doing.

I agree that graffiti on private property is vandalism, but you can't help but see what a beautiful piece of art this is. We can only hope that UP will find it as visually stunning as I do and it doesn't get painted over or stripped off.

Micro-Trains has been doing a series of N-Scale cars with graffiti on them. I hope they release a model of this car!

I don't think graffiti artist are the brightest people, but this one was a bit of a visionary and certainly knew what a 4-4-0 American looked like. Who would ever have guessed!

Not sure whether to commend this artist or consider this vandalism.

UP 6187 - As I stated in my previous comment above - As much as I can appreciate the work of the "artist" and the knowledge they displayed to not disturb or paint over the car reporting number - I can appreciate the work and the graphic - but I do NOT condone this IF it was done without permission - therefore making it an act of vandalism - therefore a crime deserving the necessary consequences of disciplinary result for such crime. "A pig in a dress - is still a pig!" Vandalism without permission and no matter how "Beautiful" or "Artistic" or "Creative" or even "Appreciated" - is still a crime of Vandalism. If the artist did NOT get permission to paint this - no matter how much I like the work and the subject - it is still a crime, period! So a grocery store owner has a $0.79 cent candy bar stolen from the shelf every day - maybe two times a day by random kids. So it's just a couple of $0.79 cent candy bars - big deal? Do you realize that a grocery store owner who allows that to continue without consequence loses $576.70 in profit - without taxes - a YEAR? Vandalism is vandalism - it's a crime that needs to stop! Yeah I like the persons work - they still need to be dealt with for committing the crime.

Agreed, I don't like graffiti, but he made his vandalism a little bit special
