why is he standing with the locomotive brake in release? I know nothing about cab car operation so is this a normal practice? over here we stop on the automatic brake but stand with the independent unless it is insufficient to hold the train alone

The train brake is in the Handle Off position, the bvcv is in the cut out position and the reverser has been removed. Looks to me like the brakes are cut out and the engine is leading.
