People seem to be just ignoring the train about to cross the street. Pretty sad if you ask me.

I think they already crossed the highway. Conductor on the pilot is facing the rear and all the vehicles are so close as if they were already stopped.

I had the same first thought at first, but the conductor or brakeman is facing rearward indicating that they have just shoved clear of the crossing.

Look at the direction the conductor is facing, and the recent dirt displacement in the crossing. This train is moving backwards and the traffic is moving after it just cleared the crossing.

I think this is the "after" photo, and that's why the traffic is so packed.

Appears the brakeman is facing away, and the hoghead is looking in his side mirror. I'd say they are backing away from this crossing, and traffic is safely moving across.

Note the brakeman is facing away from us, indicating the train is backing toward the mainline. That would certainly explain the scene's road traffic.

It appears that the train is headed the opposite direction, by looking at the direction the brakeman is facing. He would certainly be facing the street if they were approaching it.

Looking at the cars on the grade crossing, I hope the train is in reverse and heading back to the main!

My guess is the train is moving away from the camera, so those cars and trucks were lined up at the crossing and are now free to proceed.

Hey, did anybody mention that the train might be heading away from the camera? :)

Yes - sort of funny that everyone pointed out the same thing about the train's direction... but consider these comments were probably all submitted during a period during which no one was screening/approving them. Then the avalanche of redundant comments hit...
