Wow - did they paint the station sky blue when the Rock Island became "The Rock"? Nice catch, John! As always, thanks for sharing these classic gems!

A neat picture for sure. The amount of human trash strewn about is disheartening to say the least.

From the look of that track it couldn't have been much of a rocket.

Great shot of a lost place and time. I spent time around Bureau in '82 and '83 and it had changed radically. CS/CSX came to town 5-6 days a week, interchanging with Iowa Railroad, and running down the Peoria line as far as Henry. Bureau was an interesting place to ponder the impermanence of manmade things. Not only was the CRI&P a shadow of its former self, there was also the abandoned ROW of an interurban that had once connected Joliet and Princeton, as well as remnants of the Hennepin Canal, a doomed venture that called it quits just after WWII, I believe. Hard to foresee the successful operation the Iowa Interstate would develop through here. And yes, the depot made it into blue...

The depot was later painted white with blue trim in the ROCK era, just like many other depots.
