The first examples of GE done right. Turbo and exhaust behind, instead of ahead of, the prime mover, which made for a quieter cab, was no longer GE's only advantage for trainmen. The Dash 8s had narrower hoods/wider catwalks, which made it easier and cleaner to move around outside. Wider decks and slanted stairways, front and rear, allowed easier and safer boarding/alighting, especially with baggage. (There were even EMD style hood door latches.) The longer nose allowed one to step out of the cabs front door, while moving, without thoughts of possibly tumbling forward into the tracks.
