That's just wild (and crazy)! Thanks for sharing. Gotta wonder why it ever came to be - it's not going to stop a train, unless it was something akin to the "John Bull" or "Stephenson's Rocket". Why not just use a simpler light signal?

Very interesting and well-composed photo. I saw a couple crossings like these while working on KCS tracks in Arkansas and Louisiana a decade ago. Attached to the middle of each crossing arm was your standard-issue DOT "STOP" sign.
