Why 40'? I would think that a longer car would be more versatile therefore more economically feasible. Why not make them into 53' cars? That way they could handle any type of containers domestic or foreign.

There is a higher demand for 40 foot containers, plus 48 or 53 foot ones can be stacked on top of the 40 foot ones. By converting these to 40 feet, they also take less yard space while meeting the demand beter.
