Weeds, boxcars and faded first-generation power, "those were the days." Those of us railfanning in that era NEVER expected the amazing re-birth of rail transportation that has occurred in the past 2 decades. Yes, we HOPED for it, but never really expected it would actually happen. THANKS for the memories, Bill.

This was an especially difficult period. I worked for CNW in their Cleveland sales office that year. The biggest turmoil was with Conrail and the difficult decisions that Stanley Crane was implementing to make them a viable carrier. Railroad deregulation was just underway and if had a huge impact on CNW, both positive and negative. The negative mostly was that more mergers were in the making even though it took another 14 years to pull them off.
