One of the better Tehachapi Loop pictures I've seen. Great time of day. After decades of the loop in person and in pictures, I never tire of it. Truly one of the most awesome bits of railroading around, though certainly not the only loop or the most spectacular mountains. As anyone who has driven through there knows, the terrain is brutal for railroads. Up and down, up and down, endlessly. There should be a ratio of vertical distance traveled or leveled by cuts, fills, curves and tunnels vs. total change of elevation. That would give a more accurate picture of the challenges faced by railroads getting through rolling prairies and deserts, which sometimes can make a frontal attack on a mountain pass seem tame. The line from Mojave to Bakersfield is one of those cases. Whoever created California and much of the North American West either didn't want railroads getting through, or was a model railroader at heart!
