This is sad to see. Why didn't MRL rebuild these into SD40's like many other SD45's have been. It's a fraction of the cost compared to buying new.

More than likely the reason for scrapping these engines is frame metal fatigue along with prime movers that are also worn out. They would also have to upgrade and modernize the electronics. with that said it is easy to see why they would scrap rather than rebuild these locomotives...cost. They are just too far gone to be cost effective in rebuilding.
