Another one of your eye-catching photos from this line. 'Makes me wonder what you went through to get to these remote locations. The text was very informative. Thanks!!

This was a 15 mile round trip over the hills and through a small portion of the gorge. The walk was not hard on my boots (light weight not really what I would call boots) however, the primary danger was the Cholla cactus that dots the landscape and the large ram (desert big horn sheep) that we came across on the way - there was a point where I was not sure if he was going to charge at us or not (thankfully he chose to retreat). The real conundrum about the gorge is that while the light would be better later in the year for photography, the temperature increases and with summer temperatures approaching 115 degrees F, such a trip could turn deadly if one were to run out of water. As it was, I carried 2L of water on a partly cloudy January day in the low 70's. Over the course of the walk, I drunk one of the liters and got about 400ml into the second. Carrying more water is problematic since water weight displaces camera gear and other equipment. I really wish I would have taken my 100-400mm lens, but it weighs about 10lbs and at 15 miles, that is a commitment since I am not going to drink it, or leave it behind on the way out. Thanks for looking at these an leaving comments.

EL ROCO, what was mined in the above photo?

This is a tunnel rather than a mine shaft. While there my have been sporadic mining in the Carrizo Gorge over the past 150 years, none of it was done on a commercial scale. This section of track runs between Campo California and eventually connects with the UP at Plaster City, near El Centro California.
