David, if you squint real hard, you can see cotton on the depot platform in the background

Bernie, you may be right, but I think by the time of this photo, they were just using the freight house for some sort of cardboard/packaging recycling, though the baled materials looked a lot like cotton bales, just a little smaller. The first few years I shot around Opelika ('73-'76) they definitely were still loading cotton from the buildings/platforms on the north side of the WofA just east of 10th Street.
