That is one scary barn. Death pervades the place.

Maybe EMD should dust off the blueprints for SD40-2's because obviously whatever they're doing now isn't working.

It is a shame to see these big units meet with the scrapper. I wish the 6000HP units would have worked out better than they did. They failed for both EMD and GE. Perplexed by Roy's comments since I see tons of SD60 and SD70 of all variants on mainlines of Class 1s. And I sure see way more EMD products coming back for second and third lives through rebuild programs. GE's seem like the disposable locomotives.

I totally agree with you Greg, lots of old EMD locomotives are beeing rebuit even for the third time and that is not the case for old GE locos, the only GE rebuit program i know about is the SUPER 7 ,reconstructed over old U boats frames and besides Monongahela, i dont know wish other RR accepted this rebuilt program in the US. Here in Mexico there are lots of these Super 7's fleet but their future is not very good, KCSM predecessor TFM send most of their old dash-7 and Super 7 to the torch some were sold to Brasil, the only old locos on KCSM are all EMD products.

I wonder what it would have cost to save a cab off one of these locos. I would love to have one and I assume the scrapper would let you have it if you pay the scrap value.

By all accounts EMD has righted the ship and the new units are dfar better than these from 15-20 or even 5 years ago. Progress cares, GM was in such poor shape they couldn't care.

I hope some RR museums are saving a few examples of the SD90's and that they are not all being cut up. Sitting side by side with the SD40's or SD70's really puts it into perspective just how massive the 90 series were. I doubt the Izaak Walton would ever buy one of these since the GN never owned that model, but could you imagine one of the 90's being turned into a "cabin" or office space like other locomotives had been. Tons and tons of room there.

NS is rebuilding their standard cab dash 9's into CW44AC's. I don't think their Dash 8.5 program has worked as well, but I know the AC44C6M is going strong.
