I often wondered why this happened. Maybe shunting without the rest of the train 'piped' and using the loco only brake perhaps!

Gary, judging by the speed this train must have been travelling I suspect the driver forgot what road he was on or expected to be switched, the line on the left passing under one of the viaduct arches. There doesn't seem to have been an official accident report on this.
