I am not a professional railroader having done only worked as a volunteer on a heritage railroad. There, I have only done some coupling of vintage passenger cars. With this I can see the advantage of not having to tell the engineer how far the car is, whether the pin drops or telling him to "bump" or whatever. You are there, you tell you what to do when coupling. Real simple and fast. OK, now it's night, you are the one man, you are alone, it a huge yard, the engine moves by accident, you are pinned, can't move, who is to know?
