Did Amtrak always keep both cabs operational or did some units have one cab blanked?

To my knowledge they were both kept serviceable, which prevented having to turn the locomotives at end points.

What a lot of people don't realize,is in order to MU these locomotives,you make up the hoses and cables first, then couple . There is absolutely no room to get between them.
