Those first and second N&W GP9's appear to have poling cups at the top of their stairs! One doesn't see those often on a diesel these days-- especially next to ditch lights!! Interesting find, Sid!

I probably saw these locomotives go through my hometown on the N&W when I was a youngster. The NW black actually looked good when freshly painted, but a couple of coal runs quickly took care of that.

I also saw these N&W GP-9s switching the elevator in my home town of Raymond, IL. Sweet sound from these old 567s.

What are poling pockets?

In the old days railroads used a long pole placed in the poling pocket on the pilot of a locomotive to reach the pocket on a car on an adjacent track. By this method they could move the car. It was dangerous and has been outlawed for many years (over 50).
