Many think finding a wide-cab GP40 on the CN system is somewhat of a rarity in these times, and I will admit their numbers have dropped considerably since their heyday. However to keep things in perspective it needs pointing out that 59 locomotives it still almost 3 times as many as, say, VIA has P42DCs and 6 more than their seemingly ubiquitous F40PH-3s. The wide-cab variant of the GP38-2 is a little more, but still not enough of a rarity to come as a shock if one were to stumble across one in a yard or in transfer service on any given day. I even catch them heading up mainline freights occasionally as CN is throwing just about anything that still moves under its own power into service lately.
