It was a sad era when the caboose began disappearing. Please forgive my ignorance, but what did the letter "P" on the cupolas stand for on UP cabooses?

The P stood for Pool which meant that it rotated around to wherever the train was destined to and on whichever railroad tracks or routes the train took the caboose remained on the hind end, another words it remained with the train to its destination. Cheers. Well done. Bring back the cabooses !

....and what were the short/tall white poles for along the storage track? AC/DC power for cabooses? Heating fuel?
