Nice shot of one of the great passenger trains. Interesting to see the observation car at the head of the train.

The dome-obs is at the wrong end of the train! That's a new one.

Actually, there is an obs at both ends. I don't know if one is deadheading or what the reason was for that. I have a going away shot of this train and there's definitely one there, too. Also note the UP sleeper just ahead of the rear obs, which was the "Sun Isle", believed to be a standard pool sleeper of the day.

Looks like dome obs cars on both ends. Very rare.

Beautiful!! PCA!

I'm not familiar with the geography or terrain, but from the sun angle, the train appears to be heading in an easterly direction.

Excellent shot of the California Zephyr, arguably the most scenic train route in the US, then & now. PCA vote from me. Hiawatha Pete.

The track alignment at James is basically a horseshoe curve as it winds around the hills descending from the Feather River canyon into Oroville. The train is heading southeastward nearing the end of the horseshoe and is beginning to curve more southward at this point. The WP will remain on a mostly north south alignment from here all the way to Sacramento and Stockton before turning west into the Bay area.

Great shot of a great train. I counted 16 cars including the baggage car. I have also seen this train with a Ney York central sleeper in the consist. Thanks for posting.
