A clean machine is certainly easier to maintain, but cosmetic plate-work are not the most important parts to keep clean were any locomotive (or indeed just the IC engine) is potentially ingesting large amounts of soot - unless you're the PR men of course... Pity the bloke with the brush, let's just hope he has good waterproofs!

Most wash racks on larger class 1 roads are designed to recycle the water and re-capture any chemicals used. I wonder what years and years of those drippings onto native ballast will do.

I think any clean Loco looks awesome . I would be proud in doing this job ,keeping my railroad company looking smart.
