Often when you look at ATSF and UP steam photos, the rear of the boiler is white from the strong water treatment they used because of the hard water they were stuck with. The PRR had much softer water and did not need such heavy treatment. So it some what of a mystery as to why this engine has so much white on it. I would surmise that we are seeing an engine just in from the ATSf or that the tender and boiler have left over treatment still in them.

According to the book "Pennsy Power", author A. Staufer reported that the Pennsy men liked the twelve leased 2-10-4 oil burners from the ATSF because of their spacious cabs. Thanks for sharing John.

Look at this beautiful shot! For a 2-10-4, this angle really displays the wheels. The extender rails are neat to see as well. Red brick is a great background for such a magnificent machine. Envelope the train, those engineers, and the roundhouse in one frame and you’ve got a great photo!
