This bridge is only about a mile from my home. My Uncle Jim worked on its construction and always told me that the reason this heavier replacement bridge was built was so that the LIRR could run Pennsy K-4 locomotives on heavy "summer-season" trains to Montauk. Its real value was seen about a decade later when much heavier military train movements came to the Long Island.

While they have been more recently reinforced with concrete work, the cut stone abutments remain from an earlier ( and clearly more spindly) bridge. The brush to the right will not be there much longer as there is a plan afoot to build condos along the eastern bank of the canal. The condo plan DOES INCLUDE a public access walkway / path, so picture taking from this vantage point can continue.
