These are actually clean for the SP, usually their power was disgustingly dirty and unkempt

Actually, it was only the last few years of SP's existence that their diesels looked terrible. Up through the 80s, most of the SP's locomotives were decent looking. I think that their gray paint scheme, even when clean, made people think that the units were "grubby"...
