My word. If I didn't know better I'd think they'd have had to have built that viaduct via helicopter. And what are those dark bars sticking out of the supports? Great photo.

This wonderful structure was not built in a year, but many years on very difficult work was required. Millions of board feet of timber scaffolding would have been needed just to build up to the base of the arches. Once this level was reached, then a curved support for each arch strong enough to take the weight of the planned load would be needed to be built and covered with timber decking. I notice that the entire structure appears to have been widened to carry an additional track.the side of the structure away from the camera is of newer construction.

The dark things are lights that were mounted for the subsequent nightly vehicle parade, see for example http://www.railpictures.net/photo/451471
