Notice the diesel mufflers on the roofs. I'm guessing they got rid of the old steam generators and replaced them with diesel generators for heat, light and AC.
A very good idea because heating a passenger train with steam is a real mess. Also, the old electrical generators and batteries that were in the passenger cars were a nightmare of obsolete, worn-out junk.
