You may be looking at the sunshade on a south-facing signal between the L&N and the SCL. A similar signal is near the right margin of the photo, almost in line with the nearest utility pole. The tracks swinging off to the right are the Western of Alabama to Selma and the ICG (GM&O) to Tuscaloosa.
