The metallurgy has always intrigued (and confused) me! All the failure cross-section pics look the same to me.

if you look at the base of the rail it has been broken for some time. The web and head split were a matter of time.

I guess it was. Didn't notice that before. Didn't really take a good look it while I was there. Was just the elevator track anyway so wasn't mainline quality rail. Who knows how old the rail on that elevator track is. Force of the derailment probably finished off that rail.
