My condolences to you and the citizens of both Washington and Oregon regarding that travesty of modern American aesthetics and design seen to the left. They say necessity is the mother of all invention, apparently, the P42's mother was far less desperate. It's sad that thing got in the way of an otherwise beautiful photo.

They say that time heals all wounds. Sorry - it's been a while since I first saw that abomination on the left and it's still an open sore in my opinion. I still cannot believe that a rational human being designed that cab car - At least the P42DC has an engine.

Being the owner of the "Ugliest trains contest" album, I feel I have some responsibility in evaluating whether a train is ugly enough to enter the album, and I may have developed an eye for "relative ugliness". Thus I believe that this "thing" is most probably the all-time worldwide winner of the "Ugliest Train in the World Contest". All time, all countries, all categories! The designer(s) and the builder should be ashamed. A bunch of gifted railfans would have easily produced much better, and they would have happily worked for free! Let's hope that this lamentable thing will quickly shrivel, get old, and be out of service. Very few people if any will be sad when it is scrapped (hopefully sooner rather than later). And for railfans, being happy that a train is scrapped tells a lot!

I am in agreement of the fact the Talgo cab cars are the ugliest things on American rails. I think even in the Soviet Union 40 years ago they would be considered ugly.

The unit on the left looks like a football helmet.

Looks like a winnebago. Thats a pretty big cab window, surprised it meets FRA collision needs.

Glad I rode the Talgo with one of the converted F-40PHs as the cab car,

I agree with Jean-Marc. This is hands down the winner of the ugliest train EVER!

If I had to run into something solid at 70+ mph, I'd still pick the P42. In the Talgo's defense I will say that it at least doesn't look like every other Euro design out there. Sometimes just breaking up the monotony is relief enough for an ugly sight. Wouldn't the sight of a BQ23-7 excite you a little?
