I've often wondered if the rust-like coloring on top of the loco and some of the carriages is actually copper particulate rubbed off the catenary wire or residue from the pantograph running surface material? Anyone have knowledge about this? Seems most pronounced near the pantographs. According to a Google search, the "contact wires [can range] from pure copper and copper silver up to copper tin, copper cadmium and copper magnesium."
