I'd suspect that letting was applied more than 60 years ago--those cars date from the late 1940s/early 1950s.

You can still see lots of lettering on diners and baggage cars still around if you look close and at the right angles

Nice catch, George! You were certainly paying attention to the details! Let's hope that this car (originally a C,B,&Q coach, #4737, circa 1956; later rebuilt as a diner) can find continued service after replacement.
