Didn't you model this location on your N-gauge layout a couple of years ago? Stunning photo.

Awesome catch, Mike. Two questions - is this a spur specifically to the mine or part of a branch line that serves multiple locations. Does it dead end or connect to a main on both sides? Second - I'm thinking: Perfect light - why was there a train in the shot? In other words, luck or lots of predictable traffic here?

I almost hiked up that high, but I didn't quite make it. I had actually wondered if you got a shot from there...and of course! Excellent!

By the way, if anyone ever finds a Canon lens hood (for a 100-400) on the ground under those trees at the bottom of the photo...

Randy, Yes, I have modeled this curve on my N scale layout. Mitch, This is the UP’s Moffat Tunnel main line between Denver and Salt Lake City. Amtrak 5 and 6 use the route, along with a pair of freights from UP. BNSF also operates on the line with trackage rights. To answer your question about predictability; that’s not as easy as ten years ago when this photo was taken, as there was a few more trains (especially coal) running. Jim, Yeah, I’ve been up there a few times. It was a good place to catch the summer Ski Train too. I’ll keep an eye out for the lens hood the next time I’m over there in the trees (There’s some nice shots from that elevation as well, as you probably found out. Thanks for the great comments, guys!

Vertigo alert! As only Mike can, another dizzying Tunnel District stunner. Seeing BNSF coal loads here is somewhat uncommon, so this is an even finer catch. Simply 'Grande!
