It MUST be a convoluted and interesting story, HOW an ex-US Army locomotive came to be working in a Chinese mine. Sad part is, probably no-one really knows, for sure.

A S-160 in China is not so unusual--the 2100 plus built were sent far and wide. An unknown number were shipped to pre-Revolution China under auspices of the United Nations Relief and Reconstruction Administation (UNRRRA). These locos were likely production surplus that were never deployed to Europe. The fact that the Chinese rebuilt the engines and then transfered them to industrial users speaks well of their performance and utility, despite them being an austerity design.
